Thoughts and Prayers Are NOT Enough!

Last night and this morning as I watched the numbers climb in the latest mass shooting in the USA, I couldn’t help but think that there IS a reason that this bad, this horrendous, this EVIL thing keeps happening. The inability, or unwillingness, to take on the powerful gun lobby in the USA.

What Memes Are You Sharing?

One of my ministry practices is to post a meme on the church’s Facebook page every day. I follow the pattern of Mindful Monday, Trusting Tuesday, Wisdom Wednesday, Thankful Thursday, and Friday Funday. Saturdays have been used to highlight community events and fundraisers and then it’s Sermon Sunday. I take advantage of the scheduling function…

Cracking Open

Like many others, I’m a first time vegetable gardener this year. Covid-19 and the enforced isolation at home, along with concerns about local food security, has many of us venturing into the new world of vegetable gardening. I planted a variety of veggies last Friday, including radishes. Each morning, I eagerly searched for signs of…

Wednesday

Wednesday was hard, God. Adrenaline rush of getting new systems up and running gone, body, mind and spirit depleted. Wednesday was hard God. Food bank clients waiting outside instead of warm inside with coffee and conversation buzzing. Wednesday was hard, God. Offering pastoral care with six feet of cold winter air between us. Wednesday was…

Disposable Counter Covers

Seriously! When did wiping a counter after using it become too much work? I bake regularly. I make a mess, (ask my husband!) regularly. I wet a cloth and wipe it up! When did it become easier to cut down trees, process them into paper, ship it to stores, take it home, put it on the…

Chaos and Clutter

I participate in Casa: An Experiment in Doing Church Online and this was my reflection from yesterday. Come and find the quiet centre in the crowded life we lead, find the room for hope to enter, find the frame where we are freed: clear the chaos and the clutter, clear our eyes, that we can see …

Denial Is My Spiritual Practice Too!

An unsolicited book review! Denial Is My Spiritual Practice by Rachel Hackenberg and Martha Spong  is a book that everyone needs to read! I received it on Thursday and finished it Sunday afternoon. Their courage and vulnerability in sharing such hard parts of their personal stories, stories that we often only share with our closest…

All My Life’s a Circle

Or a spiral or something… Fourteen years ago, about this time of year, I left my home in Nova Scotia to head to Ontario. Ordained for a little over a month, I was on my way to my settlement charge in Claremont, a ‘hamlet’ about an hour northeast of Toronto. I spent the first night…

Legends and Heroes

This is a copy of the letter I wrote to Jennie King, Managing Director of the Royal Nova Scotia International Tattoo:  Dear Ms King, I have been a big fan of the Tattoo for many years; attended at least 15 performances and have  always admired how the show skillfully navigates the challenge between glorifying war…

Schrödinger’s Camera Card

A colleague who expressed appreciation for my nature photography asked me if I ever did family photos. She and her husband, their adult children, one partner, along with two dogs, were all going to be in the same place, at the same time and she wanted a family photo. I told her no, that I…
