Friday Five: The Bible!

Bibles.jpg

Just some of the Bibles I own.

Today’s Friday Five is all about the Bible!

1. What is your favorite Bible verse? Psalm 139: 7-10

Where can I go from your spirit?
Or where can I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there;
if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
If I take the wings of the morning
and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me fast.

2. What is your favorite book of the Bible? That really depends… I more or less follow the leactionary and I always find that my favourite gospel is the one I am immersed in at that time.

3. What is your favorite story from the Hebrew Scriptures? I love the grand sweeping narrative in Genesis and Exodus… the people are so dysfunctional… much like us and yet they are God’s people.

4. What is your favorite story from the Christian Scriptures? The Prodigal Son.

5. What verse do you wish people would quote less often? John 3:16.

Bonus: What is your favorite obscure fact or verse or story or thing about the Bible? The fact that the King James Version was not the first English language version and was created in part in order for it to fit Church of England ecclesiology. You can read more about it here

  2. 2 Corinthians 4:8-9

“We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;”

I know this will surprise you but I have been reading the Bible a lot as of late, I have found an interest in it as a historical text. I found this passage which speaks to me as a person with ALS.
